We often think of literature starting with a disruption—an unexpected call to adventure, a sudden surge of emotion, an arresting observation—but what if you flipped that expectation around? Write a piece where the initial disruption is anything but: maybe it’s a story about someone who lives a chaotic life but is suddenly thrust into routine, an essay about a particularly uneventful time in your life, or a poem that draws its energy from stillness and contentment.
Tuesday
Icebreakers are a nightmare activity (surely, that’s not controversial!) but they persist because some people think they serve a useful purpose. So, for today, take one of two options: either A) write a piece that focuses on a necessary evil (or useful inconvenience) or a piece inspired by one of those typical icebreaker questions. Whether your story is asking what superpower it would have (what does a story with super speed look like?) or your poem is reflecting on the regrettable utility of the DMV, infuse your writing today with the horrible essence of the icebreaker.
